South Africa Petrol Price Update

As of May 2025, South African motorists are experiencing a mix of relief and concern regarding fuel prices. While recent months have seen a downward trend in petrol and diesel costs, upcoming tax adjustments are poised to impact these gains.

May 2025 Fuel Price Overview

In May, fuel prices saw a decrease due to favorable international oil prices and a relatively stable rand.

Upcoming Changes: June 2025 Fuel Tax Increase

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced an inflation-linked increase to the General Fuel Levy (GFL), effective from 4 June 2025. This marks the end of a three-year freeze on fuel taxes.

  • Petrol: Increase of 16 cents per litre, raising the GFL to R4.12.
  • Diesel: Increase of 15 cents per litre, bringing the GFL to R3.97.

These adjustments aim to address fiscal shortfalls following the reversal of the proposed VAT increase earlier this year.

Despite the upcoming tax hikes, forecasts suggest continued relief for consumers due to favorable market conditions.
